All of our experiences are stored in our brain - in our long term memory. We best remember those experiences that have emotion attached to them.
We should always try and embrace the memories and reality of our loved one's living with dementia.

While it is not well understood, most dementia patients can remember experiences from the distant past. These are long term memories, and are not always effected by Alzheimer's. Alzheimer's patients can no longer store and remember their new experiences.
Take the example of my mom, Dotty. She once told me a story about my granfather that she remembered in great detail.
