Alzheimer's Reading Room
As is always the case these days, Dotty ordered linguine with while clam sauce.
I was please to see that Dotty can still twirl the linguine.
Amazingly, Dotty just kept eating and eating. Normally she eats about half of what is a giant sized portion of linguine.
As she was nearing the bottom of the plate, she started using her finger to assist the linguine on to the fork. She was using her hand to eat.
One lament you hear from Alzheimer's caregivers is that they cannot take their loved one out to eat in public because they eat with their hands. Yes, this can be disconcerting.
I must admit, I sat their smiling and almost laughing. I can assure you my reaction would have been very different several years ago. I was happy because Dotty seemed so incredibly happy while eating. I asked her a few times, how is it? Delicious she answered.
I can still remember clearly the times many years ago when I would take Dotty to a really good restaurant and when I asked, how is it, she would respond -- " okay". That was if she responded at all.
All of this reminded me of the article I wrote, Alzheimer's Caregiver Lament -- I can't take her out because she eats with her hands.
