What I Just Learned About Alzheimer's Caregiving
Alzheimer's disease continues to progress. As you reach each new stage there are new and different problems to address and solve.

Sometimes someone with experience steps in and provides you with new, different, and better ways to do things. Sometimes you have to figure it out on your own.

Either way, someone has to do it and that someone is usually you. Or in this case, me.

One problem I had this time around was that Dotty was so weak that even when I stood her up she couldn't turn and sit down in the wheelchair. It wasn't easy to get her into the chair during the first week or so. I wrote about the problem. Walla. A wonderful reader emailed me and explained how I could use a belt to gently turn my mother without losing control. It worked for me like a charm.

Unfortunately, I was so stressed at the time, I cannot now find that email. And, to make matter worse, I can't remember who sent it to me. If you are still out there please email me using the contact button on the navigation bar. We really do need to share this information with the readers on the Alzheimer's Reading Room.

Meanwhile, Carole Larkin sent me this link -- SDS Transfer and Rehab Vest. If Dotty was a man, I would buy that product right now. As is, I think I am going to need it in the future.

When the day comes that Dotty can no longer move much it will still be my intention to take her out into the bright light -- if possible. This gizmo might turn out to be just what I need.

At this time, Medicare does not pay for this safety belt and it isn't cheap. It does look very sturdy, and even at the current price a good value if you need it.

Maybe Allan Thomas or Phillip Clifford (company founders) would like to send one to me and let me try it out. Then I could also lend it out around the area and bring it into the awareness of others.

Nothing like the Bobby D imprimatur if you want to sell a product to Alzheimer's caregivers? Right?

I could have used that belt very effectively when Franny (that's my dad) was sick. Maybe I could have gotten him down to the beach if I had it? The thought of taking him to the beach did cross my mind many times.

Here is a bit of advice. During the dreaded six hour poop - E episode caused by the need to use magnesium citrate (MC), I noticed while giving Dotty a thorough clean up that she had a narly looking mole way way up on the inside of her thigh.

This was very worrisome, so I asked our doctor to take a look. She didn't like the look either, so she referred us to a dermatologist.

We had that checked out today. No problemo. But. But. Dotty had some kind of precancerous thing -E on her face. So the doc froze it off. The doc told Dotty it was going to sting. I laughed. He asked, whatz the matter? I said just watch.

Of course, Dotty didn't flinch. Dotty doesn't feel pain. Which means I have to be alert at all times for headaches or signs of illness.

Now to my point. I wouldn't have noticed that narly looking mole if I hadn't got the fire hose out to clean Dotty cleaner than a hounds tooth.

This woke me up. Gotta make sure I get Dotty to the dermatologist for an annual check up -- every year. Then I have to remember to tell the doc you gotta check all the places where the cows don't come home.

Or maybe I'll just say, doc you gotta check all the nooks and crannies.

I did get very good at moving Dotty around. I have all kinds of new grips and holds. I can now move her nice and easy without seeing her make that face that loosely translated means -- I'm gonna beat the hell out of you.

I wish I could get a picture of that face. It would be as good as Einstein Dotty.

I am worried about pneumonia for sure.
